Saying Goodbye To Hannah Montana

March 30th, 2022

At 8:30 p.m. on Sunday I said goodbye to Hannah Montana. Bizarre behavior for a man of 45? Perhaps, but things just aren’t the same lately. For those that follow some of my blogs, you know I have spent the last year trying to adjust to having my oldest daughter Jackie go to college, while at the same time getting ready for Samantha to join her ranks. It has been a full year of auditions, road-trips, college visits, SATS and college applications Tough stuff for a Dad, especially for one that can be an emotional mush. So what you ask does this have to do with watching the last episode of the Hannah Montana show on a Sunday night instead of the Packers vs, the Cowboys. Well in all the chaos of prepping my big girls for the next big steps in their lives, and my life I guess, I almost missed a couple of smaller steps my little girl Joelle was taking.

Can it really be six years ago, she would have been about seven then, that I first noticed her in front of the TV, singing along with the theme to the Hannah Montana show. The song is like an anthem to me now, having playfully and mockingly repeated the lyrics dozens of times over the years while enjoying Joelle. Joelle was in love with the girl who had “The Best of Both Worlds”, and could not get enough of Hannah Montana. It was a thrill to see her sing and dance and come to life whenever that show came on. I have to admit, I you might have guessed, watching more than my share of episodes and reruns with her, a couple of movies along the way as well. There was a fun and innocence to it all that was priceless even thought the Hannah Montana t-shirts, pajamas, DVDs, CDs and posters were not.

A veteran of the concert ticket purchaser wars, starting with Britney Spears back when she was barely a Mouseketeer graduate, I knew what I had to do next. That is why at the age of 41 I became what I can only imagine one of the oldest members, male nonetheless, of the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Fan Club. This unusual achievement paid dividends when just months later, thanks to my pre-sale password, I scored two second row center orchestra seats to the Hannah Montana/Miley Cyrus Concert at the Prudential Center in New Jersey. In the weeks leading up to the concert, the newspapers and television were full of stories about how this was the hottest and most sought after concert ticket in years. Comparable tickets, not even as good as my pair, where selling for upwards of $1800 a piece. Still, I held fast, and fell in love with monitoring Joelle’s excitement level those last few days as the concert grew near.

The day of the concert we got to the Prudential Center about 8 hours early to experience the Hannah Montana Bus, the giveaways, the singalongs, the trivia contests and the buzz circulating amongst thousands of young fans all there to see this show. When we finally went in to the arena, Joelle nearly lost her mind as we walked closer and closer to the stage to get to our seats. Even now, recalling the joy in Joelle’s eyes stirs my emotions. When the concert started Joelle exploded in excitement as we watched the little known opening act “The Jonas Brothers”, yes those guys. Joelle danced and sang, and I think became a fan of Nick or Joe Jonas that night. I still prefer Kevin. But Jonas fever had not really taken over yet, and her full energy and emotions were held back for the main event. What a main event it was first Hanna, then Miley and then Hannah again. Joelle had the time of her life, and guess what? So did I.
